Obituary for Irene Godenick

Irene Godenick, age 98, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Born in Perth Amboy and raised in Woodbridge, Irene lived a life characterized by strength, independence, and unwavering dedication. She resided in Woodbridge, the Plainfields, and Piscataway before moving to South Plainfield 20 years ago.

A child of the Great Depression, Irene's work ethic was forged early. She began her career at the Hubbard School cafeteria, a job that allowed her to be close to home and her young children. As her children grew older, she transitioned to a position at Revlon in the accounts receivable department. Known for her tenacity and precision, Irene managed some of the company’s largest accounts, earning a reputation as a formidable force.

Irene’s commitment to the Seventh Day Adventist Church was a cornerstone of her life. A graduate of the Plainfield Academy in the early 1940s, she was a dedicated member and organist, sharing her musical talents at services, weddings, and other church events. Irene and her husband played pivotal roles in the establishment of the Lake Nelson School and Academy and the Lake Nelson Seventh Day Adventist Church, working alongside other devoted families.

A lover of nature, Irene was a leader in the Pathfinders, a national youth organization of the church. She actively participated in the Plainfield Chapter, organizing hiking and camping trips for young children, fostering a love for the outdoors and a sense of adventure.

Irene is predeceased by her beloved husband John (2004), her son Thomas (2014), a grandson Asa (2022), and her siblings Hedwig, Katherine, and Ella. She is survived by her sons John and his wife Susan, and Mark. Irene also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Andrew (Opal), Aaron, John and his wife Lisa, Kristen and her husband David, Amy and her husband Cary, Lisa and her husband Chris, and Laura Beth; as well as 10 great-grandchildren: John, Isabella, Angelina, Tony,  John “JJ,” Wyatt, Zoey, Rowan, Rosie, and Benjamin.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2024, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069.

In remembering Irene, we honor a life devoted to faith, family, and community—a life that truly exemplified the principles and values of Jesus and the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
